How to Exercise with Diabetes
How to Safely Exercise with Type 1
- Start your workout with your blood sugar in a safe range as discussed with your doctor
- It is recommended to be careful the first time you exercise and make sure to have a caregiver with you
- Eat extra carbohydrates if your insulin drops too low
- Keep hydrated!!
- Sports and exercises like soccer, basketball, swimming, walking, and biking are all great ways to stay active while living with Type 1 Diabetes
Timing your Workout
- If you have a set workout time, prepare for it by lowering your insulin before it's time to workout
- Exercising later in the day has a higher risk of having hypoglycemia overnight, where your blood sugar drops too low. To reduce this risk you can lower your insulin before the workout
